Viet Pride by Tuyet Nhi Vo
Pencil, watercolor, acrylic
Meet the artist: Tuyet Nhi Vo
Inspiration for the piece:
The majority of my life I grew up in a predominantly white town. I knew I was different and white folks made me feel that it was wrong to be that way. Eventually, in denial, I tried to "erase" my culture, being like the other white folks to fit in; to dress, look, and act how my impression of a white female would. Getting locked up was really when I started learning who I am and actually loving myself. I'm no longer ashamed and guilty but empowered for being a person of color. I'm proud that I'm different. I'm proud to be me.
Artist statement:
I'm an artist of many things; from the paintings I create with my hands to the music I create with my voice. Every expression I make is different parts of me that I'm showing to the world. I believe my art brings light to what's so important to me. Art gives me the opportunity to communicate what's on my mind. To speak even on the uncomfortable. Convey every emotion, whether it's uplifting or it brings heartache. My main goal as an artist is to have people see my truth.
