Life Within Mashkode Bizhiki by Shequoya Basswood

Pencil and acrylic

Meet the artist: Shequoya Basswood

Inspiration for the piece:

My piece is a buffalo Mashkode Bizhiki. I chose this piece because we, like buffalo, are part of the land and everything in it, we're connected to everything in it in some way. I thought it'd feel like home to have this piece done and hanging up somewhere in someone's living room to remind them we are one with the earth and each other.

What role does art play in your life?

Art helps me express myself when I feel a strong emotion. Art plays into many parts of my life almost every day. I tend to look at things and people with an artist's point of view and notice the flaws and insecurities that make people unique.

Artist statement:

I love art. Period. Like its so healing when I'm going through something, whether I am happy, sad, anxious,or joyful, it calms my emotions, especially when I'm sad or anxious. Wellness is a big part of my life, being a healthy person is very important to me.
