Bringing the Vision for Phoenix Rising Artist Lofts to a Wider Audience
This summer, Art from the Inside (AFTI) stepped into a new arena - not a gallery, prison classroom, or community arts space, but the 2026 Minnesota Cup. AFTI was selected as a semifinalist in the 2026 MN Cup, Minnesota’s premier statewide startup competition, giving the organization an opportunity to share its work and an ambitious new vision with a much broader audience of entrepreneurs, investors, community leaders, and changemakers.For AFTI, the experience was about more than competing. It was about imagining what could happen when the power of art is paired with housing, economic opportunity, entrepreneurship, and community.
From Art Programs to a Bigger Vision
Since its founding in 2020, AFTI has created opportunities for more than 200 incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists to develop their creative practices, tell their stories, build relationships, and participate in the cultural life of their communities. Through programs such as Art & Wellness, the Creative Pathways Fellowship, the Artist Collective, exhibitions, and community engagement, AFTI has seen firsthand what happens when people are given space to create and when their creativity is taken seriously. But one question kept emerging: What happens when an artist leaves the prison system and returns home?
Too often, the barriers that contributed to incarceration like housing instability, limited employment opportunities, isolation, and lack of access to a supportive community are still waiting on the other side of the prison gate.AFTI's answer is Phoenix Rising Artist Lofts.
The vision currently is to have a home in Saint Paul that would create a supportive, affordable community for returning citizens that places creative expression at the center of reentry. The vision includes approximately 20 affordable housing units, five artist studio spaces, a gallery, retail space, event space, and opportunities for creative entrepreneurship and community engagement.
Rather than asking returning artists to leave their creativity at the door, Phoenix Rising would build a pathway where art, housing, employment, entrepreneurship, and community are connected.
A Different Kind of Startup
AFTI may not look like a traditional startup.Our "customers" aren't consumers buying an app. Our innovation isn't a piece of technology. And our growth isn't measured simply by revenue. Our innovation is human potential.
AFTI believes that people who have experienced incarceration are artists, entrepreneurs, leaders, parents, neighbors, and community members and that communities are stronger when those talents are recognized and supported. he MN Cup experience helped AFTI put that belief into a framework that could be understood beyond the arts and justice sectors. It also introduced AFTI to people who might never have encountered the organization through a traditional arts or nonprofit network.
What's Next
Being named an MN Cup semifinalist is an important milestone, but it is only one step in a much larger journey. AFTI is continuing to develop the Phoenix Rising Artist Lofts concept while expanding its existing programs for incarcerated and justice-impacted artists. The organization is also building new partnerships around creative entrepreneurship, reentry, housing, workforce development, and community engagement.The long-term goal is bigger than one building.
It is to help create a new model for reentry that recognizes creativity as an asset and community as a critical part of successful return. The Phoenix is a symbol of transformation: rising from the ashes, carrying what came before while becoming something new. That is the heart of AFTI's work. And the MN Cup gave us a new platform from which to share that story.
