Hope for Justice by Matthew Dolven

Meet the Artist: Matthew Dolven

Inspiration:

"Hope for Justice" is an affirmation of Dr. King's legacy: "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." His vision moves society closer to justice. Unchanging systems oppress all people, on all sides of justice. America must try new forms of justice. Until then, true healing and restoration will remain a distant dream. All that is needed is a dream to inspire hope and create change. Dr. King calls upon you to seek true justice.

What role does art play in your life?

Art is emotional expression. It is universal human connection and communication. Through art, I hope to share a part of me; awareness, change, hope, love, beauty. Art is joy, it is freedom, and escape. In a world that is often in conflict from all directions, art provides clarity, healing, and restoration. Through art, I hope to be a positive influence toward society.

Justice statement:

Justice is resolution. It is the one who harmed making amends to the one who was harmed. This justice does not exist in America. Current justice only creates further destruction. For me, justice will exist when our system allows me to proactively help people with the issues I personally know, rather than reacting to crime once the damage is done. Justice is a future where we invest in people before harm occurs, while holistically helping everyone when harm occurs without further damage.

Beyond words, I hope to visually engage and inspire others to see my desire for justice. Even with the problems of mass incarceration, few understand justice. Fewer still truly know how much harm our system causes everyone. If I can spark inspiration to see the dysfunction of justice and cause movement to create a system that helps all people, then my optimism can be multiplied into action.

Seek awareness, hold empathy, find logic, demand action.
