Meet the artist: Antoinette-Rie Johnson
Inspiration:
I was inspired to do this piece because I hold the light to freedom. It's been almost 9 years and all I have done is watch the time go by. Once I realized that I can stand up, have faith, courage and start to tell my story and truth. I no longer have to let time pass me by. I can use the time to work in favor. As long as I still have breath in my body I still have time on my side and time to make a change for the best in my life. Time waits for no man, don't let it pass you by!
What role does art play in your life?
I found that I am art and because of that, art plays one of the biggest roles in my life. I realized art is whatever you come up with and put out in the world. What inspires me to create art is knowing that I have something to give back to the world. I can be relatable to someone or I can give someone courage to try. Art is what you create, never stop creating. Your art just might save and change a life.
Artist statement:
I never considered myself an artist until I was selected to be a part of the 12 week AFTI program. I realized that I am art. I was beautifully and wonderfully made by my Father in heaven. Now everything I do, touch and create I know is art. Never say you're not an artist because you don't think you can draw or paint like the next person. Whatever you create - that's what makes you an artist!

Medium: Pencil, watercolor and glow in the dark paint
The inspiration for my piece was my own story. If I don't fight for my justice, then who will? Dr. King fought for justice and freedom even when he was in jail. To be jailed for nothing I think to myself, what did he feel in that moment? Instead of writing on the walls, what he did write behind the bars that couldn't be seen in the light? My piece is a glow in the dark painting, after you put up a light to it, and turn the lights off it glows in the dark.
