Reflections on the Closing Reception of JUSTICE RE-FORMED

Dear AFTI Supporters,

We are honored to reflect on the powerful closing reception of the Justice Re-Formed exhibit, held on February 19, 2025, at the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office in our state’s capitol in Saint Paul. This event was a moving culmination of a showcase that centered the artistic voices and lived experiences of individuals impacted by the justice system.

We are deeply grateful to Attorney General Keith Ellison and his staff for providing this opportunity and space to elevate these critical stories through art. His commitment to justice and community engagement helped make this exhibit possible.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to everyone who attended, supported, and uplifted this exhibit. Your presence and engagement amplify the voices of justice-impacted artists and affirm the importance of their work. We are grateful to Attorney General Keith Ellison for giving our artists this opportunity. We will never forget this chapter in the story of Art from the Inside.

This event, held during Black History Month, was rooted in honoring Black voice, resilience, and artistic expression. Another unforgettable moment was the unveiling of artist Jaik Elliott’s striking portrait of Harriet Tubman, a piece that will remain in the Attorney General’s Office as a lasting symbol of strength, liberation, and justice.

A highlight of the evening was the presence of Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan, whose attendance underscored the importance of this work and the need for continued conversations about justice, reform, and healing.

Attendees had the opportunity to witness the profound impact of these works, engage in meaningful dialogue, and honor the artists whose creativity and resilience continue to inspire change. The event reinforced the power of art as a tool for transformation, advocacy, and healing.

I am trying to express the inevitable conclusion of a long term incarceration. The tarnishing effect of the endless dehumanization inflicted by the DOC system is something that I struggle to convey. I find it may only be described as the escalating degradation of one's soul. Having been now touched in such a profound manner, I'm left to wonder if I could ever recover what has been lost to time.
